INSULIN
lnsulin is secreted
by
the
pan-
creas for the optimal control of
blood
glucose
levels. Diabetes
(high
blood
glucose levels) occurs
if
insulin
is
insuf-
ficient or the tissue sensitivity to insulin
is
suppressed. Patients
with type
I
diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabe-
tes mellitus or NIDDM) are more stable
and
oral
anti-diabetic agents
are
prescribed;
However,
type ll
diabetes
(insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or
IDDM)
often
require regular
insulin
iniections. Even for
type l, insulin
may
be required when the diabetes is
too
severe
or
not
well
controlled; during
pregnancy and delivery;
in
those
with
obvious complications
of
diabetes,
e.9.,
affecting
the
retina
(of
the eyeball) or
the peripheral nervous system or
the
kidneys, etc.; during serious infections;
before major surgery, etc. lnsulin
is
injected according to
a
"sliding
scale"
based on
the
glucose levels
before
meals
and
al
bedtime. However, even
for stable
type
I
diabetics, some
of
those
oral anti-diabetic agents may tend to
exert more pronounced stimulus
than
desired on failing pancreatic
cells. An
alternative for
a
highly
selective
group
of
type
I is
to
go for insulin injection so
as
to give a rest
to
the failing
pancre-
atic cells that
may
eventually
recover.
lnsulin
is
not "addictive". As
such
insulin injections are only
lor
highly
selective cases, consult your doctor.
