CONTROLLING
EXCESSIVE
DRINKING AND ALCOHOL
INTOXICATION
Contrary to social drinking
for
joy
and cheer,
drinking
alone for unhappi-
ness
or
indulging
in
heavy drinking,
e.9., spirits,
is
harmful. Alcohol
is
normally detoxified promptly
in
the liver
by
an "alcohol dehydrogenase" enzyme
to
prevent damage to the
liver,
other-
wise
hardening of
the
liver or
cinhosis
occurs.
However,
too
rapid
drinking
overwhelms
the detoxifying
enzyme
mechanism and alcohol goes directly
towards the
brain. Even the
delicate and
vulnerable brain
tissues are
now
adversely
affected.
As Chinese
may
well
have less optimal levels
of
the
enzyme, the liver is more likely
to
be
damaged. Even
a half-drunk
person
already has clouded consciousness,
unable
to
react
promptly
and
judgement
is
compromised. Alcoholics would most
likely
have some chronic
adverse
etfects
not only on
the
liver,
the nervous
system but also
on
the sleep pattern,
intellect and mental states, with detri-
mental effects
on
the
family, at
the work
place and
even
amongst one's
own
social circles.
lf
undue nervousness
occurs,
e.9., as a
"withdrawal
symptom",
there
is a craving
to
drink
even more with the
false
hope to clam
the
nerves
with
more alcohol
-
a
vicious cycle is
now
formed. As early
intervention
and
treatment
is required,
consult your doctor promptly to
avoid
progression
to depression and
even
suicidal tendency. Remember, alcohol-
ism is always better
prevented than
treated.
