THE CONTROL
OF
"WHITE
COAT"
HYPERTENSION
"White
coat"
hypertension
refers
to a
higher blood pressure
reading
obtained
at a
doctor's office
than
otherwise.
lt
seems to be related to the
setting
inside
the doctor's
room
ralher
than the
white coat
that other
medical
professionals
may
also wear at
work.
The occurrence
of
white coal hyperten-
sion by itself may or may not confirm
that the hypertension is,
in
fact,
more
labile. ln 1997, Muneta had studied the
personality
characteristics
of 49 Japa-
nese patients with "white coat"
hyper-
tension and found that these seemed
to
have a tendency
to
suppress their
own emotions and become over-adap-
tive to their surroundings, as compared
with
those patients with 53 patients with
"sustained" hypertension. Nevertheless,
there
is still
no consensus on
the
indication
of treatment of white
coat
hypertension, as
the
mechanism
is still
not
fully
understood.
The
main
thing
is
that all
patients should take good
time
to come to the clinic, take
a
good
rest
before being seen by
lhe
doctor.
lt
would also
be
very
useful
to
learn how
to check
the
blood pressure at
home
-
a
series of readings
is
definitely more
informative
than any single
reading,
especially
when this
is
taken
in
less
than
ideal circumstances.
To
most
people,
doctor's office
is
often
associated with
some rather unpleasant or even dread-
ful
experience.'
