DOCUMENTINGTHE
EFFICACY
OF
ORGAN
TRANSPLANTS
The story of
how a
cardiac cripple
finally
got
a
heart transplant
at
the
Wuhan
Union
Medical College Hospi-
tal and soon become
physically active
again and even have high
exercise
tolerance, e.9., able to climb a
hill,
is
commonplace.
The longest
survivor
of
cardiac transplant patients (still
surviving)
in
China
is
the one done at
the Harbin Medical Sciences University
in
1992. Up
to
1995,
there
were 259
cardiac transplant centers
in
the world,
clocking 40,000 cases, longest func-
tional survivor
is 21
years; for heart and
lung
transplant, the figure is
13
years.
As
lor
bone marrow transplant
per-
formed for
leukemia,
the world figures
in
1996 were 76,000 cases,
wilh
the
longest survivor
being22
years.
ln
fact,
the very first organ transplant was for
the
kidney
and,
by the
end of
1
995,
over
380,000 cases were clocked; by
now,
there are over 400,000 cases, with
lhe
longest survivor living
up
to
33 years;
in
China, the cities of Beijing, Shanghai,
Guangzhou and the latest addition of
Wuhan,
have
all clocked 1,000 cases
or more, with the longest survivor
at
19
years.
The Cambridge University,
UK
has
now thousands
of
cases
of
liver
transplant; Calne was
thus
invited to
share experiences
in
Wuhan in
1980.
The author also described the su@ess-
ful pioneer work on spleen transplant
lor
hemophilia.
