ALOE IS
NOT
A GOURMET
ITEM
Aloe, from
the
plant Aloe vera,
has
now been hailed as
a
"magic" health
food and
even
incorporated into
the
menu
of
some popular restaurants
as
a "gourmet
item".
Others
recommend
putting aloe
juice
directly onto the skin
for cosmetic
effects.
Aloe causes blood
congestion
of
pelvic organs
and,
indirectly,
intestinal
hurry,
i.e., it
has
laxative properties but, unlike
other
simple laxatives, the action is probably
not
directly
on
the gut
itself. Moreover,
as
the
reaction of the body to aloe var-
ies
signilicantly
amongst
subjects,
the
prescription requires
individual
readjustment,
not
to mention that there
are
many
species
of
aloe
vera
that
have
rather different medicinal properties. As
aloe
is
also allergenic, direct applica-
tion onto the skin
may
well induce sen-
sitivity
reactions
through
repeated
applications.
As
sensitivity
to
any sub-
stance may bring about cross-sensitiv-
ity
to other similar substances, skin ap-
plicalion
of
aloe
is
contra-indicated.The
advice from aloe experts
is
to
be
ex-
tremely careful
with
children
and
women, as aloe can even be danger-
ous for
these
sublects.
Those
who are
menstruating or have bleeding piles
or
nose bleeding, etc should
never
take
aloe
- it
may
make
them worse. ln preg-
nant women, aloe may even
cause
abortion.
Thus, aloe
is
definitely a
me-
dicinal
and
never
a
gourmet
item.
