APPROPRIATE
DIETARY
CALCIUM INTHE
MANAGEMENT
OF
OSTEOPOROSIS
Osteoporosis
is
related
to genetic,
sex, age
and
lifestyle (e.9., nutrition,
physical activity and personal
habits)
factors.
Dietary calcium is especially
relevant
in the
management
of
osteoporosis. Calcium, like all
other
minerals, cannot be manufactured
by
the body and must be absorbed
from
the diet. Unfortunately, the Chinese diet
is
low in calcium
as
milk
(the
richest
source
of
calcium)
is
usually
not
included. Moreover, as Chinese people
grow older,
the
ability to digest lactose
(the
sugar in
milk) commonly disap-
pears
progressively
so that
drinking milk
causes diarrhea
due
to direct fermen-
tation
by
the
normal gut flora (bacteria)
on the undigested lactose. Fortunately,
Chinese have their own "milk products"
- bean curd products
that
are
also
rich
in
calcium, as
in
the process of making,
a
lot
of
calcium sulphate
is
added.
Worth mentioning is
that,
apart from
ginger-vinegar
soup
ol
pork
knuckle
(usually with eggs having the intact
caF
cium-containing
shells),
calcium
in
the
bones and egg shells would not be lib-
erated
in any
other soup,
no
matter how
long
they are
boiled. Moreover,
in-
soluble (non-absorbable) calcium
ox-
alate is formed when oxalic acid
in
some vegetables, e.9., spinach,
com-
bine
with
dietary
calcium.
Calcium
supplements
may
be required.
Above
all,
without
adequate
calcium,
os-
teoporosis
results
despite
provision
of
all other
factors
to
prevent osteoporosis.
