Menopause may come "sneakily"
even when the menses are still normal.
Symptoms suggestive
of
such "sneaky"
menopause are emotional instability,
insomnia,
rapid
heart beats,
hot
flushes,
excessive sweating,
restlessness,
initability,
poor
temper or
loss of
sexual
drive. ln Shanghai, one study showed
that amongst women office
personnel
aged 30-40,

them have such
symptoms. They
tried
in vain various
tonics
and
their own
lives as
well
as
family lives are affected
considerably.
The
fault is
routed through the auto-
nomic nervous system
-
as
its
name
implies,
this nervous system operates
spontaneously and
it
is not possible
for
the subject to exert any control at
all.
As
the
hormonal
disturbance
is due to
the
lack of the
female
hormones se-
creted
by
the ovaries, it
is
feasible to
check
the
follicular stimulating hormone
(FSH) that
is
the watchdog lor the fe-
male hormones.
ln other
words,
when
the female hormones are
low,
the
se-
rum FSH would increase as
a
reaction
so as
to
drive the
ovaries
to
work
harder, as
it
were.
lf
the
ovaries
failed
to
respond persistently,
menopause
would set in. Hence,
in case of doubt,
the
FSH in
the
blood
should
be ascer-
tained
so
that appropriate treatment can
