With
theTraditional Chinese medi-
cine
concept,
the diet
is
of
paramount
importance
for
the patient with
kidney
disease. During
the preliminary
phase
of
kidney diseases, patient often
has
swelling
of the
face,
backache,
scanty
urine,
dizziness, ringing
in
the
ears,
thirst, and
sorethroat,
etc. As
the blood
pressure would
also rise, the diet
should
be simple and easily digestible. As the
kidney
deficiency
progresses,
the diet
should boost the function
of
both the
kidneys
and the spleen.
Most patients
with
kidney
deticiency would
have dif-
ferent degrees of swelling and scanty
urine output; they should restrict their
fluid
intake to 500 ml plus
the
previous
day's output.
The
intake of salt should
be limited to only
4
grams per
day.
With
chronic kidney deficiency, potassium
retention occurs
-
avoid potassium-rich
food, e.9.,
ham,
internal organs,
dried
scallops, dried shrimps, soy and soy
products, fruits and their juices,
bam-
boo sprouts, preserved vegetables,
etc.
Later on, even phosphorus-rich should
be avoided, e.9., heart muscles, sar-
dines
and
hairtail
fish,
etc.
When the
appetite
is poor the
temptation
to take
highly spicy food is great
but these
should
be avoided.
Smoking, drinking
and even ginseng, deer horn, and don-
key-hide
glue should also
be avoided.
For
frank kidney failures, it is impera-
tive to take
a
low protein but high calo-
rie diet.
