The polycystic kidney
is
an inborn
condition and occurs in 3-4% of
the
population.
There are multiple lluid-con-
taining cysts
in
the
substance of the
kidneys.
These are
not
cancerous
but
the condition occurs more commonly
in
close
relatives
of those with
this
disease. There is actually
no
specific
cure and
complications
like high blood
pressure, rupture of the cysts,
bleed-
ing
and infection may occur. Symptoms
like blood
in
the
urine, sudden onset of
loin pain,
etc.,
may signal
the
possibil-
ity of rupture
of
the cysts. Normally, the
kidney function
is
seldom
affected.
However,
il complications are
not pre-
vented actively
or not
being recognized,
the
kidney
function
may
even
get
worse
and worse and eventually, actual
kid-
ney
tailure
may occur.
ln worst
cases,
even
kidney
transplantation
may
be
required. Fortunately, such occurrence
is rather uncommon
but
we should still
be more vigilant and aim at minimizing
all
the
risks
of
development
of
complications.
The
patient should also
avoid direct impact to
the
loin region
to
prevent
rupturing of the cysts.
For
detection, ultra-sound examination
is
recommended
for
screening close rela-
tives of those with polycystic
kidneys.
Some authorities recommend punctur-
ing of the cysts but more experience
is
required
before
this can
be a
dayto-day
treatment
modality.
