GOOD STRATEGY
FOR
PREVENTION &TREATMENT
OF
NEPHRITIS
The
human kidneys have good
capacity. Even if
one
kidney is
gone,
the kidney function still goes
on
as nor-
mal
and
no
symptoms
ever occur. lf
this
large capacity is not
recognized;
we
may
wait
until
symptoms of kidney
in-
sufficiency occur before we would
do
anything
-
that would be too
late!
Moreover, as
in
general, there
is
no
real
cure for nephritis apart from
kidney
transplant or dialysis, the emphasis
is
more
on
prevention. Many herbs are
toxic to the kidneys, e.9.,
mu
tong, fang
ji
both
may have
diuretic
properties;
regardless
of
whether they are
the
choice diuretics, these 2 must never be
consumed together, as they are
both
kidney
toxic.
Prevention
of
nephritis
starts from the diet.
Patients
with
bor-
derline kidney functions should consult
a specific specialist and take
a
low-
protein, low-phosphorus diet so as to
conserve the
kidney
function
as much
as
possible. Limit
protein
intake
to
0.5
gram per kilogram body weight. Limit
salt to 6
grams per
day.
"Salt substi-
tutes" are actually potassium chloride
-
these are not appropriate during
bor-
derline
kidney
functions because potas-
sium tend
to
accumulate in
these
patients. Follow
up
of the kidney condi-
tion
may be
at district
hospitals or
clinics. Above all, control any hyperten-
sion and/or diabetes
well,
as both of
these conditions
may precipitate
nephritis.
