Kidney deficiency arises
from
many
entities, or
it
may be arising
primarily from the
kidney itself, e.9.,
glomerulo-nephritis (infection/degen-
eration
of
individual kidney filters),
chronic pyelitis (infection of the urine
collecting system),
or
secondary
to
other
systemic
diseases, e.9.,
lupus
nephritis, gouty nephritis, diabetic or
hypertensive nephritis, etc. As
any
resultant dyslunction of
the
kidney
is
extremely serious, the most appropri-
ate treatment must
be
sought
promptly.
As
far
as the
TCM
approach
is
con-
cerned, the theory goes
by the defi-
ciency in positive
body
factors,
e.9.,
deficiency in
qi,
blood, yin and
yang;
excess of negative body factors,
e.9.,
water, damp, blood stasis
or
even with
added
infection.
The actual sequence
of events
is
related to a very protean
development so
that
patient
treatment
has
to
be highly individualized.
As
kid-
ney
failure
is
such a serious condition,
treating
by
TCM
alone
may
not
be
appropriate and the combination
with
Western medicine should
be
the
rule.
Nevertheless, the TCM physician often
strives
to
maximize patience and the
desired
individual
care
coupled with
attention to detail
for
these very chronic
diseases with prolonged
suffering; the
patients should also collaborate closely
with
their
physicians. Above all,
a
self-
regulation
of
life
style,
self-management
of
emotion, avoidance
of
excessive
tiredness and adherence to the recom-
mended
diet
are
all
mandatory.
