The
word "kidney" has been em-
ployed interchangeably between West-
ern doctors and
Chinese Traditional
Medicine (TCM) herbalists.
However,
there are,
in
fact, practical
difterences
in opinion between the two groups
of
professionals.
To
the
TCM
herbalist,
"kidney" is much wider
than
its surface
value;
however, as
Western
medicine
also recognizes the secretion of rennin
and angiotensin from
the
kidney,
the
difference seems
to
be
less
great.
Nevertheless,
TCM
herbalists also be-
lieve that the "kidneys" capture genetic
information and has the codes
on
growth, development and ageing,
etc.
-
this
concept
is
definitely
not shared
by
Western
doctors.
The reason
for
the dif-
ference
is that
Western doctors go
by
anatomy
and
physiology
and
have
based
their
practice
on
objective
observations;
however,
TCM
herbalists
believes medicine
is
part of
nature,
there
is a
complex body incorporating
human scientific technology and knowl-
edge on humanity. Hence, to them, the
"kidney"
belongs
to
"water"
and
this
serves
lo
incorporate all related
body
functions to that one
organ.
Thus,
we
should not
use
Western medicine prin-
ciples to criticize
the
TCM
concept
for
"kidney". Neither should we try
to
ex-
plain
the
Western concept
of
the
ana-
tomical kidney
by
TCM
herbalists'
principles.
This
is like
the
international
language difference
-
nobody is right
and
nobody
is
wrong.
