THE 8 RELATIONSHIPS
BETWEEN PREGNANCY AND
THE ENVIRONMENT
Pregnant
women should
be par-
ticularly careful because many seem-
ingly harmless environmental factors
may harm the foetus, e.9., commonly
used X-rays
for
diagnosis and follow
up,
may
harm
the loetus. Although
low-
dose radiation can
be
detected
from
TV
and
computer
monitors,
these would not
do
any
harm to the foetus.
However,
some studies blame very prolonged
ex-
posures
to
low-frequency
magnetic
fields from computers for miscarriages
but
further conlirmation
is
required.
Even
electric
blankets have
been
blamed
lor
miscarriages! Long expo-
sures
to
very loud sounds are definitely
harmlul to the foetus (and
the
mother),
so are insecticides on
fruits
and veg-
etables
-
wash them thoroughly. Smok-
ing
is
the besl-known example of caus-
ing
foetal harm
- stay away
from
even
passive smoking. Drink
in moderation
and never get drunk. Tea, coffee and
coke
contain
catfeine, a
stimulant that
can cross the placenta and cause con-
traction of
blood
vessels
in
the placenta
or
the
foetus. Only weak
tea
is
permissible. Above
all,
note well that
there
may be
excessive
lead
contents
in
cosmetic preparations
and
these lead
compounds can
be
absorbed through
the
skin
or
mucus membrane (e.9., on
the lips) to cause considerable harm
to
both the mother and especially the foe-
tus
-
the development of the nervous
system and/or intelligence may well be
affected by excessive lead.
