DEPENDENCY
"Drug
dependency" is
the
term
proposed
by
WHO
to
replace
"addiction"
and
"habitual" drug abuse.The
body will
always adopt to any chronic drug
ex-
posure and even the metabolic path-
ways
in
the body
are
altered
as a result.
Because of
the
adaptation, any abrupt
drug
discontinuation
promptly leads
to
severe withdrawal
symptoms.
Moreover, strong psychological depen-
dency
on
the drug.often co-exists
and
relapse
rates
for the dependency
are
high.
The worst cases are those
who
deliberately aim at deriving the special
blissful or
heavenly sensation
by
resort-
ing
to drugs
no matter what. However,
when appropriate doses
of,
e.9.,
mor-
phine
is
carefully adjusted according to
severity of pain, addiction never occurs
and the only significant side effect of
such morphine administration
is
constipation.
However,
higher
and
higher doses
of
sell-administration may
well
damage heart,
lung, liver
and
kid-
ney functions; as
the
body gradually
fails to
clear the
drug,
toxicity also
get
worse and worse. Common abuses are
opiates, marijuana; cocaine and
psy-
chotic drugs. Even organic solvents are
snitfed! By damaging also
the
nervous
system, narcotics are more dangerous.
Besides transmitting AIDS
and
hepati-
tis
(through unclean needles),
drug
abuse
is
also
associated with increased
crime rates. Replacement therapy,
e.
9., methadone
for
opiates
may
work but
much ancillary support, re-education
to
enhance the determination reduces the
very
high
relapse rates.
