REVELATION
OF
THE "STATIN
INCIDENT''
Statins are drugs
that
help to
lower
the cholesterol
level
in
the
blood
-
under the direction
of
the doctor. Liver
function
has to be
monitored
as
adverse
liver
toxicity
may occur.
This
is
usually
reflected as elevations
of
the blood liver
enzymes,
one ol the
indicators
of
liver
tunction.
Myopathy (disease
or abnor-
malities
of
the muscles)
that can be
very
serious and can
even
be
potentially
fatal,
is
a
known complication
of
statins.
Fortunately,
this
is usually rare
with
most statins.
However,
despite exten-
sive research and clinical trials
on the
salety and adverse effect profiles,
the
last
statin
being
approved (Cerivastatin)
had
to
be
withdrawn
by its
manufacturer
Bayer.
After this incident, the special-
ists in China had laid down appropriate
guidelines regarding the use of statins.
The dose should
be
the optimum
and
guided by regular blood tests for liver
function and serum
muscle enzyme
tests.
Whenever there
is
any suspicion,
the statin concerned
has
to be reduced
in dose, suspended
or
stopped alto-
gether
until
the
blood
tests
improve.
lf
the patient complains of muscle pain
or
weakness,
lever etc.
and
are
associated
with blood
muscle
enzyme
abnormalities, the statin
concerned
should
be suspended at
once.
lf
there
is
trauma, surgical operation, low blood
pressure, grand
mal
(epilepsy), the sus-
pected statin should be
suspended
immediately.
