The
tiny cell
is the basic unit of
life.
The
cell
membrane encloses
the
cytoplasm and
the
nucleus
in
the
centre. Colour perception is possible
because some
of
our
cells
can perceive
blue
light, others,
red
light,
and
so
on.
The aggregate of function-related cells
in the body forms organs
to
cater for
many
difierent functions ol the body
like
the
senses
and
sensations,
movements, respiration, digestion,
waste disposal, intellectual activities,
memories and reproduction, etc.,
are
all taken care
of
in
the
most efficient
and coordinated
way.
Many receptors
are
now
found on the
cell
membrane
and
these would all
have
very
specific
functions.
ln
the past,
onlythe
46 chro-
mosomes of
the
human cell can be vi-
sualized but now, DNA and genetic re-
search at the molecular level of cells
have revealed how
the
master
of
con-
trol
works
and
these findings
may well
enhance disease
control.
The biologi-
cal membrane of cells decides
effec-
tively
material
and
message transfer
across
-
a critical lunction
for
disease
and health. Hypertension
is
found to be
closely related to changed vessel sen-
sitivity
to
the
autonomic
nervous
system. Tumour
cell membranes
have
tumour-specific antigens. Myasthenia
gravis
is
due
to
nerve-muscle synapse
abnormalities.
Basemenl membrane
changes
lead
to nephritis. Even mineral
transport,
e.9.,
calcium,
has now been
found
to
have
relevance
to
disease
processes.
