NEW DEVELOPMENTS
OF
CLINICAL ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture has recently
been
recognized
internationally
-
the WHO
recognizes 63 conditions for applica-
tion
and
has set up 3
international train-
ing centres
in
China.
More than
2
mil-
lion patients have been operated for
all
kinds ol operations under acupuncture
anaesthesia.
The effects can be
an-
tagonized
by Naloxone,
the
specific
antagonist of morphine
-
acupuncture
must have stimulated the production
of
"endogenous morphine".
As
acupunc-
ture
anaesthesia
also
worked
in
animals,
psychological
factors
were
ruled
out.
Nevertheless, its best appli-
cation
is
for funclional
rather
than
or-
ganic disturbances, preferably earlier
stages.
The main uses
of
acupuncture
are
for
pain, e.9.,
post-operative
pain,
toothache, trigeminal
neuralgia,
migraine, frozen shoulder,
intercostal
neuralgia,
low
back
pain,
sciatica,
pe-
ripheral facial nerve palsy, post-stroke
paresis
(with
some
degree
ol
residual
muscle strength), paralytic ileus, blad-
der
atony
etc,
the best results
are
those
of
non-organic paralysis recovery. Acu-
puncture
is
also applicable to all sorts
of smooth muscle spasm, e.9., bron-
chial
spasm,
diaphragmatic
spasm,
oesophagus, stomach
and
intestinal
smooth muscle spasm,
etc.
Acupunc-
ture would have an accelerated imple-
mentation and
recognition worldwide;
mechanism of acupuncture would
be
better
understood.
Lastly, "needleless
acupuncture" would
also
be fully
developed.
