DRUGS
FOR THE
MANAGEMENT OF REFLUX
OESOPHAGITIS FOLLOWING
RADICAL GASTRECTOMY
Stomach cancer is a
common
cancer that is
usually
treated by
radi-
cal gastrectomy
-
a
major operation
designed to eradicate all
local
cancer
and
the
regional spread
to
lymph
nodes.
However, regurgitation
of
swal-
lowed
food
back
to the gullet
(reflux
oesophagitis) may occur after surgery.
The
symptoms
and signs are
upper
abdominal distension, belching, gen-
eral weakness, chest pain, anaemia,
etc.
As usually
no
more
remedial op-
erations are feasible, the Decotion of
lnula
&
Hematitum
and
Four
Noble
Drugs (Si
Jun Xuan
Dai Tang) have
been
tried
in 46
such
patients out of a
series of 100 patients with radical gas-
trectomy for
stomach
cancer.
They
managed to quote very remarkable
re-
sponse
rates
-
after two
courses of
such
treatment,

was
reported
to
be "cured" and 15.21"h, "improved".
Only 8.69% was
reported
to
have "no
response".
ln responsive cases, the
quality of life was
also
improved.
