The
story of
thalidomide
is
tragic
-
it is
probably the most infamous drug
in medical
history.
First marketed
in
Europe
in
the 50s as
a
sedative,
it
was
taken by
many otherwise
normal
individuals, including pregnant women.
Babies born from mothers taking the
drugs
had
rudimentary
limbs.
However,
as most patients (men
or
those women
who were not pregnant) had
no
prob-
lems
with thalidomide,
it
was
not
sus-
pected
until the
60s.
ln
Germany alone,
the total number of congenital abnor-
malities resulting from thalidomide was
10,000.
5,000 of them
were
alive and
1,600 of them eventually had
to
use
artificial
limbs.
This story should
im-
press on all pregnant women
to
con-
sider
critically
any drugs they take
-
a
lot
of
these can cross the placenta and
have prolound effects
on
the fast
de-
veloping foetus inside the womb, es-
pecially during the
first
3
months of
pregnancy. Well
known
current
ex-
amples
of
these
drugs are
anti-cancer
drugs, anti-thyroid drugs,
ergots,
steroids, hormones, anti-convulsants,
anti-coagulants,
aspirin,
certain
antibiotics, colchicine,
antacids,
sedatives,
etc.
