CALCIUM DEFICIENCY
IN
THE
ELDERLY
AND STROKE
Osteoporosis
-
the loss
of
calcium
affecting bone structure and stability
and even results
in
fractures, may
be
associated
with ectopic calcification
in
other
tissues,
i.e., abnormal deposit of
calcium in soft tissues, e.9.,
heart
muscles or valves,
the
muscle layer
of
arteries, fat and liver tissues or
even
the
pancreas.
Such deposits may lead
to
diseases. The
hardening of blood
vessels (atherosclerosis)
may
be
pre-
cipitated
by
the presence of such
ab-
normal
calcium
salts.
Occasionally,
modern "Doppled' ultrasound can dem-
onstrate plaques from atherosclerotic
neck vessels
and
this may
be
associ-
ated with
stroke.
Such atherosclerosis
is
again
related to ectopic calcification.
It
seems that the
best
way of preven-
tion
is to
take
adequate
calcium
in the
diet.
Unfortunately, the Chinese diet
is
grossly deficient
in
calcium.
lf
milk
or
milk products like cheese cannot be in-
tegrated into the diet, daily
calcium
supplements of
1,000
to
1200 mg are
recommended. Care must
be
taken not
to consume too
much
spinach
or
tung
choi (swamp morning-glory) because
these contain oxalic acid
that
may pre-
cipitate calcium salts, making
it
difficult
to
absorb.
