LIGHT
CONTAMINATION IS
CLOSERTHANYOU
BELIEVE
The
proliferation
ol
curtain wall
glasses has been condemned as
a
"new public nuisance"
-
depending on
the
surface
area and
shape
of
the
building,
such reflections
can
concen-
trate
sunlight and
become
even
stronger
than sunlight itself.
The
current
recommendation is for these
glasses
to
rellect no more
lhan
12"/"
ol
sunlight. However, otherthan
that,
other
light contamination are also relevant.
The inappropriate and prolonged
use
of
indoor lighting may disturb
the
biological
clock in the
body;
some
florescent lights have
a
strong blue light
component so
that
inappropriate and
very
prolonged use may
possibly
contribute
to the formation of
skin
cancer through its special ultra-violet
component.
lf
those colourful
and
glittering neon lights are too
near
domestic homes, residents may
have
dizziness
or
headache. ln the work
environment, welding, metal smelting
and even
photocopying have very
strong lights that can hurt the lenses
of
the
eye and cause cataract. Scientists
are already working
on a
safer
light
that
has
a
green component
and
the param-
eters can even
be
computer-controlled;
moreover,
in
Belgium,
a
curtain wall
glass reflecting only 5% of the
sunlight
is
already available. These are highly
encouraging.
