"Laughter is
the
best medicine"
but it is possible
to
laugh so much
that
life is
at
risk.
The space between the
lungs and the chest wall
is
a
thin
"pleural
cavity"
-
a
vacuum
lo
ensure
the
lungs would follow chest
wall
movements during breathing. lf there
is
leakage
of
the
vacuum,
air
would
rush
in
and
the
lung would
collapse.
Considerable shortness
ol
breath
results as "pneumothorax" or air in the
pleural cavity sets in. This can
be
caused by sharp inluries
of
the chest
wall. The spontaneous kind
is
usually
due
to
previous lung
disease
resulting
in scarring of
the
lung surface and
a
dramatic laughter, strong
sneeze or
cough
are
possible
triggering
mechanisms.
lf the
leakage
is
large,
there
may be
so
much
air
trapped
inside
the
pleural
cavity that
the
pressure rises,
causing
severe
shortness
of
breath, cough, pallor,
cyanosis (turning blue), coldness
of
the
limbs, excessive sweating, weakness
of the
pulse, dropping of
the
blood
pressure
and
eventually shock. This
potentially fatal condition
requires
immediate hospitalization.
For
those
who
had
previous known
lung
diseases,
it pays to be more careful.
