MEDICAL
PRATICES
Once
a
provincial
patient
suspected
of
having glaucoma travelled
to
a
famous hospital
in
Beijing
but
found
the bookings were
rather
full.
He was
introduced
by a
fellow patient to
a
fake
student of a lamous prolessor there.
The
trip to
Beijing
to
seek
the
best
management was thus wasted. Even
a
surgical resident
in
a lamous general
hospital acted as another "salesman"
for a small district
hospital
-
he
wrote
the
refenal letter for an unsuspecting
patient with
gastric bleeding
tor the
sake
ol the "rebate"
but at
the expense ol the
patient.
Last August,
the
Beijing
Paediatric
Hospital
tracked on
such
"salesmen"
to an illegal
clinic
studded
with sign
boards
for various specialist
centres.
ln
general, such "salesmen"
are often engaged by illegal clinics to
lure patients; these are
common
in
large
general hospitals
in
Shanghai
and
Beijing as many non-local patients are
found there; these "salesmen" are most
active
when
the
bookings
are
full.
Fortunately,
the
Government
is
organizing
a
systematic attack on such
unethical and
illegal
dealings.
Nevertheless,
all
non-local
patients
must be on the look out for such fraud,
otherwise, at least
their
health would
suffer.
