PREVENTION OF
OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS
FROM COMPUTERS
Ever since
the personal computer
became popular, occupational hazards
from
the
PC
also
began
to
prevail.
Excessive tiredness
of
the
eyes,
dizziness and blurring of vision are the
symptoms. Apart
from
poor quality
monitors, inappropriate
lighting is also
relevant. Other common symptoms are
spasm
of
the hand, painful wrist, numb-
ness of
fingers, shoulder and
back pain.
"lnternet addicts" may even
have
noticeable psychological
or
behavioural
changes. They
have
headache,
insomnia, excessive
sweating,
anorexia, tiredness, depression,
lack
of
concentration
and
change
ol
temperament, etc. Work efficiency
is
affected.
These could
be due
to
tension,
monotony, and pressure
of
work. When
working on computers, avoid direct
glare
from the windows;
dim
the
room
lights and avoid direct lighting
from
above.
The
height
and
distance of
the
table and chair should
be
well adjusted
so
that the monitor
is
slightly below eye
level.
The angle between the forearm
and arm as well as the thighs and legs
is
-90".
The
feet should
rest on the
lloor
or a
foot
rest; the back is adequately
cushioned. After working for an hour
or
so,
take
a
break and perform exercises
for all
afiected
muscles.
