A
NEW METHOD OFTREATING
CATARACT
Like other old age changes
of
the
body,
the crystal-clear
lens of
the
eye
would become
more opaque
with
age
-
cataract formation. Cataract usually
is not
common until around
45
years
of
age,
alter that, it
becomes more
and
more common.
As
medical
treatments
are largely inetfective, operative
lens
extraction
is
the
best way
to
restore
vision.
Unfortunately,
a
very
thick
lens
has
to
be
worn permanently
as
"spectacles"
to take
over
the
lost
optical function.
This
unnatural
way of
correcting
light
transmission results
in
a sub-optimal vision and objects are
considerably larger than the
normal
eye.
For appropriate
adult
patients
whose
eye
is
otherwise
hormal
(no retinal
abnormalities, glaucoma,
inflammation of
the
pupil lining, severe
corneal abnormalities, etc.), and are
in
good general health (no uncontrolled
diabetes or collagen diseases, etc), an
artificial
lens
is
now
available
for
implan-
tation following cataract
extraction.
As
it takes
a
few
months for the artificial
lens
to settle down completely,
during
this
period, avoid constipation
as
vigorous straining
in
the toilet or other
vigorous
physical
efforts
may
be
detrimental.
Regular
follow
up
visits to
the eye clinic
is
also vital.
