but
there was
a
severe blood incompatibility
between
the mother and the foetus. Exchange
transfusion
was
required to prevent ly-
sis
(breaking down) of
the
red blood
cells
leading to anaemia or even
loetal
death. ln
Bonn,
their novel
but
success-
ful method was to inject drugs and pain
killers directly
through the umbilical cord
instead
of
through the mother's
body.
Aminocentesis is the tapping of
the
foetal fluid
for
examination
and
"embryonologf
is now
devoted
to the
management of diseases ol
the
foetus.
Even prenidatory diagnosis
is
now
possible
before
the
embryo is
firmly
implanted
to
the
womb.
Prenatal
diagnosis and management
is
enabled
through
the
cord
blood examination,
even to operate
on the
foetus taken out
by
caesarean section and
putting
it
back
after corrective operation is possible.
The foetus
is
"born
twice"!
Srich
foetuses managed by novel methods
have
a
higher "Apgar
score"
-
their
performance score at birth.
ln
future, all
such novel
methods
would
become
more and
more
available
and
afiordable
so that
mankind
would
benefit
substantially.
