BEWARE! NOSE PAIN CAN
BE
DUETO HEART DISEASE
A
4S-year
old
engineer
had
a
burning
pain at the
tip of
his nose;
it
was
related
to physical
exertion and
accompanied
by
sweating
and
weakness, but was always relieved by
rest. The
ear,
nose
and
throat surgeon
found
nothing wrong.
Two
weeks
later,
after morning physical exercises,
he
had more severe pain spreading to the
upper
lip. There
was nausea, vomiting,
profuse sweating
-
all
these symptoms
failed to
resolve
upon resting.
ln the
hospital, heart disease was
diagnosed
by
ECG
-
extensive
myocardial
infarct
(death
of heart
muscles).
He was
very
grateful
to the
doctor who saved
his
life.
Another incidence
of
atypical
presen-
tation
of
heart disease
occurred
in
a
51-year old female hospital
staff. She
had
severe
toothache
requiring strong
pain killers; she was also pale
and
weak.
Unfortunately, she
died suddenly
3 hours
later
and post-mortem
exami-
nation
found
extensive myocardial
infarct. The pain of myocardial infarct
is
usually localized
in
front
of
the heart;
it
is
persistent
and
compressing
in
character.
Some
patients
may have
pain "referred"
to
the upper
tummy or
even to the jaw, neck
and upper
back.
A sense of alertness and appropriate
suspicion goes a
long way.
