HEART DISEASES AND
LIPID.CONDITIONING
DRUGS
According
to
WHO, each year
15
million people die from heart diseases.
The
trend
is on
the increase especially
for developing countries
-
by 2015, the
figure becomes
24.4millionl
At
present,
the
most serious
killer is high
blood
pressure and coronaries.
Even the
pub-
lic should
know all the
associated
risk
factors
-
too
much saturated
fat,
smoking,
lack of exercises and uncon-
trolled blood
pressure. With the higher
standards of living, the blood choles-
terol
level rises,
the
low-density lipid
and triglycerides levels
rise,
the
high-
density
lipid
(which prevents harden-
ing of
blood vessels)
is
decreasing. The
normal level
of
cholesterol
is
2.9-6 mmol/l;
for
triglycerides,
0.23-1
.24
mmoUl. For
a
population,
every
rise of 0.6 mmol/l of cholesterol,
the risk of having coronaries increases
by
1/3.
tn
China, the
rise of
the popula-
tion
cholesterol over the years
had
increased the
risks of
having
coronar-
ies 3-4
times
higher. Take your
food and
drink within
reason;
refrain
from
smoking;
restrict drinking and
salt
intake; undertake exercises
to
maintain
ideal body weight.
lf
unsuccessful
after 3-6 months, lipid-conditioning
drugs can
be considered
-
these do
have side effects
and
should never be
self-prescribed.
