NEW
CONCEPTS
ON WHY
WE
GET
CANCER
Cells
in
the body are aligned
in
an orderly way and
perform various
functions accordingly.
Cancers
compose of disorganized cells which
have lost
their
original structure and
function. The cells would grow continu-
ously
until
the
normal structure (and
function) is
affected.
They
may also
spread
to other
parts of
the
body. ln
every cell, genes control all activities;
oncogenes
control
the
possible
trans-
formation
to
cancer. Although
the
normal
function
of
oncogenes
is
unknown, we
know
what cancers are
caused
by the aberrant
function
of
these
genes. ln
1775,
it
was
discovered
that
chimney sweepers had higher inci-
dence
of
cancer
ol
the
scrotal
skin
(covering the testes) due to the pres-
ence
of
hydrocarbons
in
coal
tar.
Similarly, nitrosamines
in
vinegar-pre-
served vegetables
in
China were found
to
cause cancers
of
the
gullet;
the
as-
sociation between cigarette smoke and
lung cancer
is well
known.
Other
cancers are associated with
virus
infection
-
the causal
relationship
between hepatitis
B
and liver cancer
is
well documented.
As
we
know some
of
the causes of cancer, prevention
is
through
a
balanced diet,
abstaining
from over-eating, especially fat; avoid
over-drinking
and
smoking; take
more
vegetables; avoid too salty,
too
hot
(temperature), burnt
or
rotten
food;
reduce exposure
to
the sun; keep good
body hygiene.
