FINDINGS
ON
THE GENETICS
OF
CANCER
A
substantial proportion
of
patients with lung or breast cancers are
believed
to
be related to
genelics-27"/"
of
lung cancer
victims
around
the
age
of 50
and
30o/o
of breast cancer victims.
Cancer
of
the nasopharynx
(back of
the
nose)
is
peculiarly
prevalent
in South-
ern Chinese, especially the Cantonese
-
even the
3'd
generation migrants to
the
USA
still
have
a
much higher
incidence rate than the Americans
-
good evidence
for the
genetic
component. The contents of
certain
hydroxy enzymes
in the cell
may
determine
the likelihood of
getting
cancer
as
these enzymes
may
enhance
carcinogenic substances.
Other
cancers with a
known
genetic compo-
nent are colon, ovary and
prostate.
What is inherited
is
just
the tendency
to develop the cancer and preventive
measures directed to
the
environmen-
tal factors are still worthwhile. A defec-
tive tumour suppressor
gene p53
was
discovered in rectal, brain, lung, breast,
gullet and bone cancers. ln
those
patients with family history ol cancer,
the occurrence of
p53
was even higher.
The defect of p53 may be inherited and
a
high tendency
to
develop cancer
results.
Those with family history
of
cancer
should
have periodic examina-
tion
so that early cancers discovered
can be cured.
