PREDISPOSING TO
HIGH
BLOOD
PRESSURE
Pels,.sfenthigh blood pressure is
a very common
disease.
ln
China,
around
11.8% of
the population have
high blood pressure
-
an estimated 80
million patients;
in USA,
the
rate
is
even
higher,
the corresponding
number is a
close 50 million, yet the population
is
only
1/5
of
China.
From
40
year
onwards, the systolic (upper) pressure
normally goes
up
-10
mm
Hg
for every
10
years of age. lt takes around
15
years of uncontrolled pressure to have
effect on
vital organs.
Unfortunately,
during this
period,
there are
no
symp-
toms at all
-
it
is only picked up
by
periodic body check
up.
lt
is
also
worthy to
note
the predisposing factors,
e.9., both parents or an identical twin
have high blood pressure; other factors
are high-salt intake (causing excessive
water
retention),
over-weight
(leads
to
hardening
of
blood vessels
and
increases
the
burden of
the
heart);
excessive drinking (>40 grams of alco-
hol per day) and certain personalities
(the
agitated,
tense and over-reacting
type); smoking (nicotine causes con-
striction of blood vessels and
transient
rise in blood pressure); even living
in
high altitudes and
in
severe
cold
weather
may raise
the
blood pressure.
