THE DIRECTION
FOR
CANCER
CONTROL
IN
THE
21ST
CENTURY
There
has
been some over-dra-
matized
news
on the "complete cure"
for
all
cancers
in
2
years'
time.
Realistically, all oncologists are
much
more conservative. Despite
all
the
recent advances, the problem
has
to be
approached step-by-step.
For
example,
herceptin, the gene therapy that can
shrink some breast cancers with the
HER-2/neu
gene, is
still
undergoing
clinical
trials
and not
available
commercially. Another
very
clever
method called "Anti-sense"
is to
block
the communication between the can-
cer cells and their component protein
(so that they cannot repair themselves
after damage);
this
method has
been
found
to
suppress
tumour growth
in
2/31
patients
-
this
is already highly
significant and represent the result of
a lot of
work and expenses
put
in.
Tamoxifen
(and
the
newer
compound
Raloxifen) are
both
tested for
preven-
tion of
breast cancer; as cancer of
the
womb
may result, a consensus on
the
cosVbenefit ratio and
the logistics
has
to be
reached. Breastconservalion
by
limited resection followed by
radio-
therapy is also not as popular as it
should,
even in
USA.
Screening
for
prostate
cancer
definitely
reduces
mortality
rate;
however,
with
few excep-
tions (those treated by radiotherapy),
impotence
or
loss
of
urinary control
results. A
lot of
work
has to be done.
