and vascular diseases killed 12 million
per year

Amongst these, hypertension
not only
has
the
highest incidence rate but
is
also the
main
risk
factor of strokes,
coro-
naries, and
kidney failure.
Without much
symptoms, hypertension kills
silently.
With maximum preventive efforts, the
incidence
rate
would be
reduced
by
55%.
With early detection and
early
treatment, the incidence
of
strokes and
coronaries would also be reduced
by
half.
Have
an appropriate diet -
avoid
excessive
salt, take
moderate exer-
cises,
undertake smoking cessation,
limit
drinking
and maintain psychologi-
cal
balance. Every year, check
blood
pressure twice.
At
present, newer gen-
erations of more specific anti-hyperten-
sive drugs are already available
for
the
doctors'prescription
and
their side
ef-
fects are correspondingly less
than
older
generation
ones.
ln
China,
hypertensives should strive to be more
knowledgeable and more compliant so
that the
disease becomes more control-
lable.
