TROUBLESOME
DIABETIC SKIN CONDITIONS
As diabetes can atfect the
skin,
some patients may present as
skin
conditions without
realizing
the
under-
lying problem. Diabetic skin conditions
can be localized
or
generalized.
Locally,
itchiness
of
the vulva or the anus
are
the commonest, sometimes,
even
the
limbs, face or
the tummy
skin are also
affected. All
these are often
related
to
the predisposition to infection
due to
the
high blood sugar
contents
of
the
tissues.
Diabetic eczema occurs mostly
in
the
vulva,
the armpit
or
scalp etc.These get
better
with control of
diabetes
and
patients should avoid wearing tight
clothing. Fungal infections are common
in
diabetics
-
signs
of
redness, scaling
and intense itchiness occur in
the
digital webs, groin, vagina,
vulva,
corner
of the
mouth, beneath
the
breasts etc. Bacterial infection would
produce
pus -
uncontrolled,
it
can end
up in necrosis
of
tissues. As diabetes
affects peripheral nerves, poor
skin
sensation can lead
to skin
ulceration
from trauma ol the sole. Poor manage-
ment can end up in leg amputation but
Prof Xi's
combined
East
&
West method
would help to decrease this.
