HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
-
THE GREATEST
ENEMY
OF GOOD
HEALTH
ln
China,
there are 90 million high
blood pressure patients
but
only
20
million know about
it
and
less than 4.5
million are receiving treatment.
Even
less are those receiving
systematic
management
and taking
medication
regularly.
A
48-year
old
man was
admitted
for
dizziness,
vomiting,
numbness ol limbs and found to
have
a
stroke due
to
hardening of
the
brain
blood vessel and resulting in
rupture.
After operation, the
patient
was
still
unable
to
speak. He had
a
history of
high blood pressure for
ten
plus years.
Another man, 52, felt sternal discom-
fort and was
found
by
electrocardiogram
to
be having an
acute coronary attack
requiring
intensive care facilities in the
hospital. He
actually had
high blood
pressure
for
many years. High blood
pressure can damage vessels of the
brain, heart and kidneys and causes
heart enlargement and
subsequent
failure, blockage of coronaries, strokes
and even kidney
failure.
Obesity,
excessive
salt
intake,
smoking,
prolonged stress and lack of
physical
activities, relaxation
etc
are all
related
to high blood pressure.
