DIABETES
!
Latent auto-immune diabetes
mellitus
in
adults
(LADA) is
a
newly
coined type of diabetes. LADA patients
are
usually non-obese
adults
in whom
a
mistaken self-destruction (auto-im-
mune phenomenon) of
the
pancreas
islet cells (normally producing
insulin)
are afiected to
a
variable
extent.
Hence,
the
diagnosis
of
LADA
is
mainly
dependent on the demonstration
of
auto-immune parameters. As there
is
a
definite damage to the pancreas islet
cells, insulin injection for
controlling
various stages
of LADA
is
indicated.The
sulphaurea group of oral anti-diabetic
agents should
be
avoided because
their
action
is
to stimulate
the
production
ol
insulin. Unfortunately, this would
put
an
unnecessary strain on
the
already-
damaged
islet cells. On
top ol that,
all
supplementary management
like food
and drink control should
never
be
forgotten
as
these would otfer a great
help to the control
of
the
sugar
level
and,
consequently, reduce the risk
of
getting
complications.
