EARLY SYMPTOMS
OF
VARIOUS KINDS
OF
CANCER
Early cancers can
be
cured more
readily.
lt is
worthwhile to note some of
the possible early sings of
common
cancers. Early brain tumours present
as progressive headache, vomiting
unrelated to food, visual disturbance,
loss
of
recent memory or even convul-
sions. Early nasopharyngeal (back of
the nose) cancers are asymptomatic
but may present
as
blood
streaked
nasal discharge, obstruction, deafness
or
neck node enlargement.
Lung
cancers present as cough, often with
blood
stained
phlegm,
chest
pain,
shortness
of
breath. Cancers ol
the
gullet present as ditficulty
in
swallow-
ing,
sense
of
food stuck
in
the gullet
and
chest pain. Stomach cancers present
as non-specific symptoms
like
tummy
distension
or
discomfort
that is
not
relieved by
food,
loss of
appetite,
mild
nausea,
vomiting of "coffee
ground"
material and passing of tarry stools
-
very dark stools of altered blood. Often
related
to
hepatitis B infection,
liver
cancers are not noticed until
late.
Hence, infected subjects should
have
regular
checks
for the
circulating tumour
marker AFP
in
the blood. Colo-rectal
cancers present
as
lower
tummy
ache
or blood in the stools.
