WHAT CAUSES
BREAST CANCER ?
As there
are
many
unknown
factors,
the
definitive causes
of
breast
cancer
are
not well
established.
Many
associated factors
have been
proposed, e.9., genetic, hormone, diet,
radiation, infection and even organic
solvents. Genetic factors are definitely
relevant in
the
minority
of
patients,
especially those with family history of
breast
cancer. A
female hormone called
oestrogen
is closely
related
to
the
groMh
of breast
cancer
cells
and breast
feeding one's offspring may offer
a
protective effect against breasl cancer.
As oral contraceptives have been used
for a
long
time already,
we
can
now
document possible causative etfects
with very prolonged usage
of
the
pill.
A
high
fat diel and possibly
excessive
alcohol consumption may increase the
risk of having breast cancer. The
eflect
of radiation
is
cumulative and
has
been
quoted
to
be
0.5olo
increase per cGy
(unit
of
radiation). Around
2-4Vo
ol
non-cancerous swellings
in
the breast
(adenomas) may
eventually
turn
cancerous. The causation of
breast
cancer
is likely
to
be multifactorial.
