FOLLOW
UP
AND
REHABILITATION
Cancer
cells
can spread
to
distant
sites in the
body
-
from
a
"primary"
to "secondaries".
Hidden
cancer cells can also start to
divide
later.
Early detection
of
relapse
or
spread
enables
salvage
programmes.
The chance of having
a
second cancer
at
the same site
is
a few folds higher
than
others.
Occasionally,
the
primary
cancer is only detectable
sometime
after treating the
secondaries.
Certain
treatment modalities themselves
can
also cause
cancer.
Hence, follow
up
clinical visits are
paramount.
ln
fact,
such visits would also contribute to the
scientific assessment of all treatment
modalities.
Psychological rehabilitation
deals
with the
emotive nature,
the
elfects and
the
stigma
of
"cancer".
Functional rehabilitation
include
physiotherapy and physical exercise,
eg,
after
lung resection,
the
remaining
lung must
be
exercised to compensate
the
loss.
ln general, moderate
physi-
cal exercise and a balanced diet
is
highly
beneficial.
The time frame
for
resuming work and sexual
life
depends
on the clinical condition and must
be
done
gradually.
Tiredness
is
a
signal
to stop.
