TREATMENT
OF
MENOPAUSE.PROPER
EMPLOYMENT
OF
SEX
HORMONES
Treatment
of
menopause com-
prises explanation of
the
physiologic
changes
enough by
the
climacteric,
ventilation
of
the patient's anxieties,
re-
assurance, and hormonal replacement.
Estrogen
therapy
not only suppresses
hot flashes, diminishes anthralgia, and
relieves
dyspareunia
but
also
helps
to
prevent osteoporosis and
may delay
the
onset of coronary arteriosclerotic heart
disease.
Sex steroid
treatment
should
be administrated indefinitely. After
a number
of
years, withdrawal bleed-
ing
will
no
longer
occur
and
the
progestational component can
be
omit-
ted. However, regular periodic
exami-
nations
of
the breast and pelvis are es-
sential, as are
vaginal
smears or
other
techniques for the detection of carci-
noma
of
the endometrium. The
matu-
ration
index obtained from vaginal
smears
is useful
for regulating estrogen
dosage.
ln
addition
to
estrogen, proges-
terone or
even
androgen
can
be
used
forsome
of
the
patientswith climacteric.
lndication, dosage, and advantage and
disadvantage of each agent have been
broadly discussed in
the
paper.
