TREATMENT
OF
PARKINSON'S
DISEASE
BY
INTRA-CEREBRAL
IMPLANTATION
OF
NERVE
TISSUES
Parkinson's disease,
this
by
no
means
a
rare
condition, was
named
and classically described
by James
Parkinson in
1817.
Typically,
this
is
a
disorder of middle or late life, with
very
gradual progression and a prolonged
course.
Athough there
is no
treatment
that
is
known
to
halt
or
reverse
the
neuronal degeneration that presumably
underlies Parkinson's disease,methods
including L-dihydroryphenylalamine
(L-
dopa)
are
available
which can
bring
about a considerable degree
of
relief
from
symptoms
in many patients.
An important advance
in
the at-
tempt
to
relieve the symptoms of the
disorder has been
the
recent develop-
ment of
stereotaxic surgery and implan-
tation ol dopa-producing nerve tissues.
This
involves
the placement
of
precisely
localized
focal
lesion,
either in
the
globus
pallidus
or
ventrolateral
thalamus. The
best result
occur
in pa-
tients who are relatively young and
in
good health with
sound
mentality, and
studies
are
still
in
progress
as to
what
ils
ideal location should
be.
