ZINC
DEFICIENCY,
ITS
NEGATIVE
EFFECT
ON HEALTH
Zinc, a trace element,
is
essen-
tialto
normal organ
lunction
of
a
healthy
person. Disorders in man caused
by
zinc deficiency has been recognized
in
the recent
20
years. Clinical manifes-
tations
for
zinc deficiency, which
have
been demonstrated by numerous sci-
entific studies, include retarded growth,
delayed sexual maturation, impaired
immune function, decreased sensitiv-
ity
of
taste
(hypogensia) and
smell
(hyposmia),
etc.
The response
of
these
disorders
to zinc
supplementation
in
pa-
tients with either
low
plasma
or hair
zinc
concentrations indicates that zinc defi-
ciency occurs not infrequently.
At
present,
the diagnosis
of
zinc
deficiency
in
man requires
knowledge
of the diet (containing
low
concentra-
tion
of
zinc or
poor
bioavailability)
and
of the contributing factors which may
increase endogenous losses
or
requirments. The
diagnosis
may be
fi-
nally established by
a
carefully control-
led
therapeutic trial
of
zinc
under con-
ditions where
the
intake of other nutri-
ents is adequate.
