WINTER
Based on
the
recent data
lrom ten
hospitals
in
Shanghai, acute myocardial
infarction (Ml) exhibits a bimodal
sea-
son distribution,
i.e., a
first peak of inci-
dence
in December,
and a secondary
peak in March
of
next
year.
This
sea-
sonal
distribution pattem represents the
provoking effect
of
cold weather
in
servere winter on
Ml.
Laboratory stud-
ies, on
the
other hand, have
docu-
mented
that
one of
the
major cause
of
Ml
is
coronary
occlusion
with an
inad-
equate blood supply. Cold temperature
in severe winter may act as one of the
factors that increase arterial spasm and
coronary
occlusion.
Thus,
in winter
time, any circumstances like cold tem-
perature in which
coronary
blood sup-
ply can
be
reduced
and
cardiac
contractility
is
increased should
be
avoid.
