EFFORTS
TO
SALVAGE
VISION
IN
PATIENTS WITH DIABETES
Poor vision, or
at
last blindness
due
to
retinopathy may be one of the
common complications in patients with
diabetes.
This can be detected
in
vary-
ing degrees in more than 70 percent
of
diabetic patients after 20 years of clini-
cal
diabetes The
lesion is attributed
to
neovascularization
followin
g
destruction
of nerve cells on
the retinal.
The major
factor responsible
for
advanced diabetic
retinopathy is
a
lack or decrease
ol
nerve growth
factor
(NGF).
This
will
block
an
interaction between NGF and
its receptor
(NGFR)
and
cause
forma-
tion
of
new blood vessels
and
impairment of patient's
vision.
Experi-
mental studies have shown
that
NGF
may
delay onset of
blindness
or
make
it less
severe.
NGF products made by
bioengineering techniques have shown
clinical
benefits for
diabetic
patients
with
poor vision.
