Preventing Infantile Gastroenteritis in the Autumn-Winter Season
“Autumn diarrhea” – a form of viral gut infection (gastroenteritis) common in cool climates; characterized by frequent watery feces. This
gastroenteritis is due to a wheel-shaped virus: the rotavirus commonly affecting those 6-18 months old. Transmitting through the fecal-
oral route (less commonly, through droplet transmission), the infection, the outbreaks of it may occur in autumn to winter seasons
when larger epidemics may also occur. Symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea with tummy aches – the bowel may open ten, twenty or even
thirty times a day; stool is watery, typically with a white-yellowish color, usually without blood or mucus; the kid may well have signs
of dehydration: excessive thirst, irritability, lethargic, dry lips, pale skin and with decreased elasticity; limbs are cold; urine, scanty;
in infants, the window in the front part of the skull is depressed – a definite sign of dehydration with high mortality. Patients often
have initial signs of “cough & cold”. Immediate hospitalization is mandatory as mortality is high with the rapid onset of dehydration.
Prevention is to avoid food and water contamination, e.g., by frequent hand washing; vaccines are available but are not routinely
administered.
