Tobacco & Drinking: a Double Whammy
The tobacco smoke has strong cancer-causing substances, e.g., benzpyrene, nitrosamines, cyanides, dust particles (nearly 100% of
size PM 2.5), heavy metals, radioactive polonium, etc. – all enclosed in tar and enter our body through inhalation. With drinking, the
alcohol (and a small amounts of the even more toxic methanol), both being good solvents of tar and literally wash harmful substances
diretly into various parts of our body, leading to atherosclerosis and subsequent organ poor blood supply. Alcohol (and methanol) are
directly toxic to the liver, leading to liver cirrhosis (hardening). Tobacco causes oral cavity, throat, gullet, stomach and lung cancers.
Alcohol is also toxic to brain cells; may predispose to senile dementia. Once, a renowned calligrapher (who had engraved for Sasaki
Atsuko, wife of the World Ping-Pong Champion Zhuang Zedong) who had a habit of consuming the prestigious tobacco and spirits as
gifts in lieu of his fees but died from throat cancer as a result. Beware of the “double whammy”: tobacco and drinking!
