Alert on the Proliferation of Misleading Medical Advertisements
The Guangdong Food & Drug Administration Bureau had cracked down on an "XX" brand of “smooth intestinal transit” drink from
a certain Outsell company 2006-2008: for repeated falsified claims and illegal advertisements. Despite fines, the product still sells
very well but users got unexpected diarrheas. Another item claims eradication of almost all cancers and 500,000 patients believed it,
despite the product registration was just for health food – not even a drug! A district hospital in Harbin rented out a clinic area to a
braggart who claimed that their Clinic represented the Hospital as one of the Nation’s top ten in infertility! They spent tremendous funds
on publicity to mislead laymen who lose much funds and/or valuable time required for orthodox treatments – especially relevant to
cancers. As the Government has difficulty to eradicate these, the laymen must acquire more medical knowledge, increase their alertness
and never to take the advertisements claims for granted: always seek a reliable second opinion, e.g., from well-established or reputable
hospitals.
