Oxygen and Health
Oxygen (O2) is the keynote player for metabolism, the brain being the most sensitive to hypoxia (lack of O2). Energy is stored in
chemical bonds, e.g., of adenosine triphosphate). O2 is transported by Hb (hemoglobin) of red blood cells, with 0.3% in the plasma:
the usable form of O2. Shortness of breath and skin cyanosis signify hypoxia, e.g., of high altitudes or airway diseases; or lack of Hb,
e.g., anemia, carbon monoxide poisoning; or circulatory failure, e.g., shock or heart failure, or local blood clots in vessels; or poisons,
e.g., cyanides, sulfides, phosphorus, etc. Chronic hypoxia is the culprit of, e.g., distant metastatic spread of cancers; Alzheimer’s
disease, senile dementia: through
β
-amyloid peptide (A
β
)–centric scheme depicts production of reactive O2 species and cellular
mitochrondria damage. Have fresh air even in air-conditioned premises; take veggies, e.g., green onion, Chinese chives, dark plum, gai
lan, spring bamboo shoots, broad beans and spinach, etc. Learn about aerobic exercises, e.g., swimming, brisk walking; domestic O2
concentrators and hyperbaric O2 – consult your doctor!
