Should We Take Delicious Raw Fish?
In Beijing, after eating raw golden apple snails, 12 people were infected by Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a parasite in our
cerebro-spinal fluid bathing the brain and spinal cord causing headache, fever, neck rigidity, facial palsies or even death. Each
snail contains 3,000-6,000 parasites! Avoid raw fresh-water snails, prawns or frogs, etc. Fresh water fish contains clonorchis
sinensis that invades our bile system inside the liver, even if raw fish is soaked in wine. Eventually, gall stones develop in
the gall bladder and the bile ducts. Although the Japanese take a lot of shashimi, their parasite infection rate is low, mostly
because their raw fish is from the sea. Moreover, there are very strict dietary hygienic regulations governing the preparation,
manufacture, utilization, storage, transport and display of food items; for fishery products, the rules on rearing, catching and
preservation (including temperature and expiry dates, etc.) are all very strictly observed. Avoid uncooked fishery products;
unboiled water; label water receptacles as “boiled” or otherwise; similarly, cutting tools are clearly separated. Lastly, do not
feed raw fishery produce to animals.
