Safeguarding Our “Chemical Factory”: the Liver
Functions of our liver: (1) Synthesis of proteins (2) As our liver is the body’s largest store of sugar and fat, overeating is a cause of
“fatty liver” (3) Detoxification of various toxins and unwanted chemicals, including female hormone: subnormal liver function is related
to gynecomastia (enlargement of the male breast), impotence and menstrual disorders, etc. (4) Provides immunity (through globulin
antibodies and cellular defences) (5) Blood coagulation factors (6) Manufactured by the liver, bile (for fat digestion; stored inside
the gall bladder) contains bilirubin: if excessive, jaundice (yellowish tinge of skin and sclera) ensues, as caused by: (a) Excessive
production of the natural degradation products of worn-out red blood cells (RBCs), e.g., in hemolytic jaundice (jaundice due to
excessive destruction of RBCs) (b) A “sick” liver handling bilirubin poorly (c) Outflow obstructions, e.g., blockage at the main bile
duct: the patient may also have pale stool and tea-colored urine (regurgitation of bilirubin into the blood, thence, appear in the urine;
with undigested fat, steatorrhea (fatty diarrhea) may occur. The liver has a tremendous repair potential: after losing up to 50% of it, e.g.,
as donation for liver transplants, its function would still recover in several weeks’ time.
